High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) is an alternate mode of mechanical ventilation that delivers small tidal volumes at rapid ventilation rates and may lead to less ventilator-induced lung injury (1) and a reduced risk of acteletrauma (2). Its use in the pediatric critical care unit varies (2).
This lecture will discuss:
• An overview of HFOV as a mode of ventilation
• The settings used in HFOV for pediatric patients
• When and how to use HFOV for pediatric patients
• The evidence of benefit of HFOV as a lung protective strategy
