Oxygen therapy is one of the most used therapies in neonates, especially in the preterm population(1-2). Striving for optimised oxygen exposure by targeting SpO2 may have a significant impact on outcomes for these patients.
The use of automated FiO2 control may lead to reduced hypoxic and hyperoxic events, minimise long term exposure to high FiO2 levels, less periods outside the target SpO2 range and an improved workflow for the bedside caregiver(2).
This lecture will discuss:
•Oxygen supplementation and SpO2 targeting in neonates
•The effects of hypoxia and hyperoxia
•Automated control of oxygen delivery systems
•Preliminary results of recent clinical studies
