Abbreviated Biography

Based in Manchester, I was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist sub-specialising in heart failure and cardiac devices at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2015. I am an Honorary Reader in Cardiovascular Sciences at University of Manchester and National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) specialty co-lead for Cardiovascular Research in Greater Manchester. Having worked in the NHS for nearly 20 years, I have a strong understanding of how the healthcare system operates and how gaps in service provision can impact patient care and outcomes. In view of these considerations, my research interests are focussed on using data and technology to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes.

In my working week I am a clinical cardiologist with a large Heart Failure and Complex Device practice.
I aspire to align clinical care with research practice and have a passion for service improvement.

1. Co-chair Global Expert Panel STEP-HFpEF and STEPDM clinical studies (NovoNordisk)

2. National Lead (UK) for STEP-HF and STEP-DM clinical studies (NovoNordisk)

3. National Lead for Medtronic Triage-HF Plus clinical study.

This investigator-initiated study is recruited patients from 3 hospitals across Greater Manchester region (>600 patients enrolled into a novel remote monitoring clinical care pathway)

4. Chief investigator for NHSX Cardiology Elective Recovery Grant

5. Clinical lead on SmartHearts (TriageHF) collaboration between the NHS and Academic

Health Science Network

6. Member of UK Cardiovascular infection working group

7. GM NIHR Cardiovascular specialty co-lead (2016-present).

8. Research lead Manchester Heart Centre (2015-2020).

Since 2015 I have been principal investigator for >20 commercial/ academic studies atMRI.

Grants

2022 - Lead investigator NHSX Cardiology Elective Recovery Grant; £750,000. This project will implement and scale-up a digital device-HF care pathway and mobile Health monitoring across Greater Manchester

2020 - Co-author of original GM HF Careplan. The careplan was subsequently used to secure a NHSX grant for £250,000 to digitalise the care plan, administered by HInM.

2019

Chief Investigator: Triage HF Plus- Evaluating the utility of a novel device-based remote monitoring pathway for the identification and management of worsening heart failure. An investigator-led, industry sponsored clinical evaluation.
Lead clinician on successful UKRI Industry strategy challenge fund: Using a digital transformation approach to drive improved clinical outcomes for patients with heart failure. Funding MRC UKRI £330,000, administered by HInM (Funding to UoM for stats collaboration)

2018 - Co-applicant: Physical Activity Patterns and major Health Events in older people with implantable cardiac electronic devices (PAPHE). The PhD clinical research fellowship was co-sponsored by research grant and the BHF.
