Head of Department Diabetes Research Centre University of Leicester, Leicester, United Kingdom

Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, UK. Prof Kamlesh Khunti is Co-Director of the Leicester Diabetes Centre and leads a research group that is currently working on the early identification of, and interventions with, people who have cardiometabolic disease or who are at increased risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases. His work has influenced national and international guidelines on the screening and management of people with diabetes. Professor Khunti is also Director of the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) East Midlands and Director of The Real-World Evidence Unit and Centre for BME Health. He is a NIHR Senior Investigator and Principal Investigator on several major national and international studies. He is the National NIHR ARC Theme Lead for Multimorbidity and Ethnicity and Diversity. He is also Honorary Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Department of General Practice, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Overview

Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics and Director, Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Chan is a clinician scientist committed to translating evidence to practice and developing novel solutions for unmet needs. In the early 1990s, she set up the Hong Kong Diabetes Register and multiple cohorts to define the epidemiology of diabetes in Chinese populations. She is currently a member of an NIH-funded Global Consortium to discover causal genes in type 2 diabetes in a multi-ethnic population.

As one of the first Asian investigators involved in large scale multicenter studies in diabetes since 1990s, she established the CUHK Diabetes Clinical Trial Centre to implement a large number of landmark studies, pragmatic trials and epidemiological surveys. She is a steering committee member of multicenter clinical trials including the ORIENT, EASIE, EXSCEL, ACE, FIDELIO, FIGARO which evaluate the effects of novel compounds on clinical outcomes in diabetes. She founded the Asia Diabetes Foundation to develop the first web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Program which uses logistics, collaborative care, and information technology to promote quality improvement and collaborative research, now implemented in 11 Asian countries.

Professor Nemencio A. Nicodemus Jr. trained in Internal Medicine and Adult Endocrinology at the Philippine General Hospital. Currently, he works in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in the University of the Philippines, College of Medicine. He is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the Philippine General Hospital

Overview

Dr Aslam Amod graduated at the University of Natal in 1988 and is a Fellow of the College of Physicians in South Africa as well as the Royal College of Physicians in London. He is certified in the sub-speciality of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

He is an endocrinologist in private practice at the Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital, and is also a lecturer at the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology, University of Kwa Zulu Natal. He has also been a past lecturer at the Cardiff University School of Medicine in Wales.

Aslam has always been actively involved in clinical and academic medicine, clinical research and medical education for the past 30 years. He lectures widely in the field of endocrinology, has presented at local and international congresses, and has published more than 45 articles in local and international journals. He has served as an executive member and chairperson of many medical societies. Currently he is an executive member of The Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa as well as The Society of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa [SEMDSA]. Aslam is also the chairman and chief editor for the (SEMDSA) Type 2 Diabetes Guidelines for South Africa since 2011.
